CAROLINE Meredith is in no doubt that research into the causes of, and treatments, for cancer saved her life after a breast cancer diagnosis shortly after her 40th birthday.

And 17 years on, the mum-of-two, who lives in Cwmbran, said she is "honoured" to have been asked to officially open Cancer Research UK's new shop in the town's shopping centre.

The 57-year-old, who works as a general manager, cut the ribbon at the shop in Cwmbran Shopping Centre's North Walk.

“I have been cancer free for 17 years and I’m here thanks to research,” she said.

“I’ve seen my two boys grow up and I’m proof there is life after cancer.

“At the time I didn’t self-examine myself - thank goodness my husband noticed the lump and it was caught in the early stages.”

Mrs Meredith had surgery to remove the tumour, followed by radiotherapy. She was also prescribed the hormone therapy treatment tamoxifen, taking it for the next five years to help stop the cancer returning.

Cancer Research UK proved the benefits of taking tamoxifen after surgery for women with the most common type of breast cancer. Around eight in 10 women now survive for at least 10 years, thanks in part to this life-saving treatment.

“I’m now living a perfectly normal and healthy life,” said Mrs Meredith.

“I love my fitness and have completed two Tough Mudders (endurance races) as well as Cancer Research UK’s Race for Life.”

Mrs Meredith was accompanied at the opening by husband Simon, and one of her sons, Owen. Pontnewydd Male Choir sang before the opening ceremony.

“I feel really honoured to have opened the store. I wouldn’t be here today if it wasn’t for research and I’m proud to have played a part in supporting the charity’s vital work,” said Mrs Meredith.

All profits from the new shop, will support Cancer Research UK’s life-saving research. The charity spends around £4 million a year in Wales on some of the UK’s leading scientific and clinical research.

Volunteers are also being sought to help at the shop. Flexible hours are available, and anyone interested is invited to call in to find out more.
