PEOPLE will again have the chance to cross Newport Transporter Bridge soon.

Next month, brave visitors will again be able to walk across the top of the iconic structure, which is 592 foot above the surface of the River Usk.

Guests will be able to enjoy the unique experience from April 3, although the gondola – which transports people from each side of the river – is currently out of action.

The motors on the Victorian Gondola have been in constant operation since 1906 and were found to need extensive repair after a routine maintenance inspection uncovered some worn out parts.

As this is a historic landmark many of the components have aged, so will have to be made especially.

Newport City Council hope that the gondola will be operational by the end of May.

A spokesperson said: “Visitors can still come and see the bridge and take the walk to the top to catch the spectacular views across the city.

“Unfortunately, the winding gear does need some work and because of the specialist nature of the mechanics we had to get parts manufactured which takes time.

“We were given a timescale of this work taking around three months so we are hoping the gondola will be working again sometime in May.”

Despite this, all are welcome to visit the structure and – the braver – can walk across the top from April 3.

It will be open from 10am to 5pm Wednesdays to Sundays, with the last admission to the high level at 4pm. Whilst the gondola is out of action admission will be at a reduced price.

A push to raise funds to keep the Transporter Bridge in good working order and to build a new visitor centre with specialist facilities is still on track, following the winter closure.
