THERE isn’t much Tony Borg hasn’t achieved in boxing since switching from fighter to coach.

His St Joseph’s gym has become a production line of champions over the last decade with leading lights including Lee Selby, Gary Buckland and Craig Evans.

One of the country’s top trainers, Borg has guided countless amateurs and professionals to Olympic and Commonwealth Games medals and Welsh, British, Commonwealth, European and world titles.

On top of that, Cardiff-born Borg continues to help members of the local community improve their fitness. His tireless efforts haven’t gone unnoticed in recent years, with a number of accolades for his work as a trainer of some of the UK’s top talents.

And this year, Borg has been nominated in two South Wales Argus Sports Awards categories – Professional Sports Personality of the Year and Coach of the Year.

“Tony works tirelessly to promote boxing at all levels from children to world champions,” said nominator Sharyn Donnachie. “He teaches respect, commitment and diligence.”

Juliette Williams added: "Tony is incredibly humble and has a wealth of experience he shares with all who spend time with him. He is incredibly talented and gives his time for the love of the sport. He will do anything to encourage and inspire children and adults alike.”

Phill Whaley said: “Tony deserves this award for his tireless work with the professionals at St Joes, for the endless hours with the amateur fighters and for always makings time for people looking to improve general fitness.”

Nominations can be made at www.southwalesargus.co.uk/sportsawards with the deadline now midnight on Sunday.
