CHOOSING where to fill up while out on the road can be a gamble.

Do you refuel close to home or take the chance that you’ll spot prices a few pence cheaper while out and about?

This can pay off, but it may also mean paying over the odds if you find yourself with an nearly empty tank and no choice with of where to fill up.

So in an effort to take out the guesswork we’ve had a look at where the cheapest places to fill up with either unleaded or diesel across the region.

Caerphilly boasts the cheapest fuel of both types in Gwent – with unleaded available for 115.7p per litre at Asda in Pontygwindy Road and Morrisons in Bedwas Road, while diesel is available at 124.9p per litre at the Esso garage in Newport Road, Trethomas.

Meanwhile in Newport, the cheapest unleaded can be found at 116.7p per litre at Morrisons in Azalea Road, Rogerstone, while the lowest price for diesel in the city is at Asda in East Market Street, Pill, where drivers can fill up for 126.7p per litre.

Drivers in Monmouthshire face shelling out a little more, with Tesco in Station Road, Chepstow offering the lowest prices for both types of fuel – at 120.9p per litre for unleaded and 126.9p per litre for diesel.

Drivers in the north of the county may want to drive just over the border to the Gulf garage in Lower Lane, Berry Hill, Coleford, where unleaded is available for 121.9p per litre.

The cheapest unleaded in Torfaen is available at the Texaco garage in Avondale Road, Cwmbran, at 115.9p per litre, while the lowest price for diesel is 129.9p per litre, available at Tesco in Lower Bridge Street, Pontypool.

And in Blaenau Gwent, Tesco in North West Approach, Ebbw Vale, offers the cheapest prices for unleaded and diesel, available at 119.9p per litre and 127.9p per litre respectively. Tesco in Castle Street, Abertillery, also offers diesel at the same price.

Those prepared to drive to Asda in Dowlais Top, Merthyr Tydfil, will find unleaded slightly cheaper, at 117.9p per litre, and diesel for 126.7p per litre.

Figures by price comparison website confused.com show across Wales as a whole the average price for unleaded is 120p per litre while diesel costs on average 129.7p per litre – so Gwent is roughly in line with the rest of the country – although the UK-wide average is higher, at £121.8p per litre for unleaded, and 130.4p per litre for diesel, meaning drivers in Gwent are paying less than others in the UK, even in the more expensive areas of the region.

But prices are up around 2p per litre across the board both in Gwent and across the UK since the start of February.

The confused.com figures also show, while prices have increased in the past month, they have been falling since October last year, when they reached a high of 131.4p per litre for unleaded and 136.6p per litre for diesel.
