A FILM raising awareness on autism and featuring neurodiverse actors has included filming in Newport.

Showdown, by Fine Rolling Media, is the tale of a young autistic boy, Sam, who is passionate about Western films and must decide between standing down or staying his ground when a showdown for the soul of his village takes place at the local corner shop.

Sam is played by autistic actor Charlie Lock, and is written by Lewis Carter, who directed and produced it along with Kristian Kane. Welsh actor and autism activist, Richard Mylan is an executive producer of the production, along with co-producer Shannon Britton.

Some interior shots of the corner shop, where the pivotal showdown takes place, may be recognised as the Spar and Post Office on Bassaleg Road.

Mr Carter said: “We would like to thank the staff of the Spar for being so accommodating and helpful.”

Another Newport element of Showdown is featuring Newport-based Michael Austin as a shopkeeper.

South Wales Argus:

Michael Austin as a shopkeeper in Showdown by Fine Rolling Media

Mr Austin said: “I was approached by Fine Rolling Media (FRM) and asked to help with an awareness film. I’m always happy to help when I can for a good cause.

“I play Bill, the shopkeeper in the local corner shop, and I’m sure the guys at FRM have done the film justice.

“Showdown offers serious moments, with the odd comical interlude, which will hopefully help the audience develop a greater understanding of autism as they’re transported into the world of cowboy loving Sam.”
