AN INQUEST into the death of a 33-year-old man who died at Pen y Fan Pond has been opened and adjourned.

Senior coroner Wendy James was told today in Newport that David Karl Lerwill, of the Caerphilly area, was found dead at the bottom of Pen y Fan Pond on March 26.

The day before (March 25) the emergency services had responded to a call that a male was drowning in that pond.

A search was called off because of bad light and resumed the next day, when Mr Lerwill's body was found.

It was established, the coroner heard, that Mr Lerwill had been drinking at the pond with friends, and decided to go for a swim.

The coroner also heard there were no suspicions around Mr Lerwill's death, and no third-party involvement.

Mr Lerwill's body was released for funeral purposes, and the inquest was adjourned for three months.
