THERE’S no stopping a talented singer from his latest tour, inspired by the iconic music of Queen.

Tom Chaplin, frontman of rock band Keane, is celebrating the music of Queen with a six-date UK tour performing 20 of his favourite songs by the rock band.

He will be joined by the 24-piece Leo Green Orchestra, performing an array of popular hits including Somebody To Love, Don’t Stop Me Now, Killer Queen and Bohemian Rhapsody.

This follows the huge success of his concert recorded at The London Palladium for BBC Radio 2’s Friday Night Is Music Night series and includes one Welsh date: at Cardiff’s St David’s Hall on Friday April 19.

Speaking of his solo work, Mr Chaplin said: “It gives you a certain sense of freedom, as you can make your own decisions and be creative with different things, such as this Queen project.

“Queen is an integral part of my DNA; I always wanted to be Freddie Mercury. This would’ve been harder with a band because you need to make compromises, but I am very grateful and lucky.

“When I was younger it was all about trying to make my dream come true, all about the band and getting there. Following our success, it makes it easier to pick and choose and you know yourself better.”

The BBC2 recording was just before Christmas and Mr Chaplin said he is ‘really excited’ to bring his Queen performances on tour.

“The vocal range is quite high, and the songs have quite a complicated structure and variations,” said Mr Chaplin.

“I’ve forgotten some of the detail, so now I’m focusing on getting back to grips with the music, making sure they’re cemented back in my brain. They’re amazing songs that everyone can sing along too.

“The Orchestra are magnificent as well. They’re so big and powerful – it’s not Queen, but it’s the next best thing.”

The tour will also see Mr Chaplin perform in various parts of England, but he is particularly excited about the Welsh gig.

Mr Chaplin said: “I love performing in Wales because there’s such a great culture of singing. Everyone sings together in happiness and it’s lovely.”

The tour will include 20 of Mr Chaplin’s favourite songs, but he was unable to pick an all-time favourite. But, his 5-year-old daughter's favourite Queen song is Bohemian Rhapsody.

“I’ll walk past her room and hear her singing ‘Scaramouche, Scaramouche’ and it’s so sweet,” added Mr Chaplin.

“Queen’s songs are so catchy, with such a powerful influence and they ignite people’s sense of wonder. There’s no other band quite like them.”

The Songs of Queen starring Tom Chaplin will be at St David’s Hall from 8pm on April 19.

There are still some tickets available from stdavidshallcardiff.co.uk or you can call the venue on 029 2087 8444.

The day ahead of this Tom Chaplin will perform in Bournemouth. Following the Cardiff gig he is performing in London, Oxford, Harrogate and Manchester.
