ONE man’s rubbish is another man’s treasure.

That’s the thinking behind this shop at Newport Household Waste Recycling Centre in Maesglas.

A dizzying array of second-hand items offer opportunity for bargains and up-selling, with many items ticketed for far less than their actual worth.

Last year, the shop sold a compact mirror for 50p – the buyer then sold it on for a staggering £150 at an auction. The savvy shopper was kind enough to give £10 back to the store.

The shop’s profit is split 50/50 between the council and a charity of Wastesavers’ choosing.

Here are the bargain buys currently on offer - maybe you could be the next person to make a profit of more than £100.

Giant cuddly teddy bear – £7

Sorrowfully perched and longing for company, this giant cuddly bear is next year’s Valentines Day gift already sorted.

Normally retailing at around £30, this is a snip at £7 with labels still attached.

Golf clubs – £1 each, bag £4

Just starting out? You have two options.

You can spend hundreds of pounds on clubs convincing yourself they’ll improve your swing, or you can get a complete set and bag for under £15 and be just as rubbish as you would be anyway.

Route One Bag – £2

New Route One backpacks will set you back £16.99, so this represents a shrewd saving.

Blemished by a light stain only – a stain you would probably cause yourself within a few weeks anyway – this is a stylish bag with plenty of space and practical pockets.

Balloon Prints – 50p

Half-term is around the corner and this is the perfect way to keep your little ones satisfied.

Simply insert the balloon material into your printer – it works with most printers – and choose which image you’d like to be on the balloon.

For 50p, that’s pretty cool.

Five mugs for £1

We’ve all been there.

All the family have descended on your house in one chattering mass and suddenly, disaster strikes.

There aren’t enough mugs for the countless cups of teas requested.

Those that miss out say they don’t mind but you can expect a shoddy Christmas gift next year.

Folders – 50p

Forgo your costly trip to a stationary store and take advantage of cheap folders.

Not exactly the most glamorous of purchases, but useful nonetheless.

Vintage Noman Sewing Machine – £30

A rare antique, this vintage sewing machine looks a snip at £30.

Vintage, they say, is fashionable.

So, even if you have no intention of selling it on, it’s a stylish furnishing.

Miniature Toy Cars – 20p

A selection of miniature toy cars are available for next-to-nothing.

This eye-catching number was the pick of the lot.

Toy Pirate Ship – £2

This is a steal a real pirate would be proud of.

At £2, your children can be as destructive and careless with this ship as they like.

Candle – 50p

There is a faintly primitive look to this.

But this back-to-basics feel could be the antidote to our chaotic and dishevelled world.

Or maybe it’s just a candle – you decide.

Chair – £10

Unless you’re a high-flying city banker, everyone’s office chair is uncomfortable.

This £10 investment in your long-term comfort is worth it.

We can’t promise it will stop colleagues from stealing it when you’re on holiday, though.
