THE family of a father who died from melanoma are holding a charity golf day to raise money for the Skin Cancer Research Fund (SCaRF).

John Murray was 36 when he died, and his family have held the golf day in his memory ever since.

Mr Murray’s nephew Conor Crowley is organising this year’s event, which will include an afternoon of golf followed by food and entertainment in the evening.

He said: “It is overwhelming for my family to see this level of support.

“It’s an honour to do it. Counting up the money that we have raised at the end of the day and being able to give that money to charity is overwhelming.”

Mr Crowley said that his uncle was a keen sportsman, and it was a shock when he died.

“John was a keen golfer and footballer,” he said.

“He was a very fit man and was known as a keen marathon runner.

“He worked as a social worker with children.

"He was so young. When he died his daughter was only 18 months old.

“We decided to host a golf day in memory of him. My dad and my uncle started the event.

“In our first year, there were 40 to 50 people taking part.

“It grew up to about 90 people but then it started going a bit downhill.
