A BATCH of ecstasy tablets stamped with the Donkey Kong video game character caused a man to become seriously ill this week, requiring hospital treatment, Gwent Police said.

In a warning issued last night, the force said there was "growing concern" in the community over the drug, and wanted to make people aware of the dangers.

One line of enquiry into the death of 13-year-old Carson Price is that he may have taken the Donkey Kong pills.

Carson was found unconscious in Ystrad Mynach Park on April 12.

Gwent Police are yet to confirm an exact cause of Carson's death, but said possible links to Donkey Kong were one of the main lines of enquiry.

There has also been "lots of speculation on social media" was a factor in Carson's death, the police added.

Superintendent Nick McLain said: “The community are telling us that they have growing concerns about this drug and we want to do all we can to make people aware of the dangers.

"Our advice to all members of the public who may currently have this drug in their possession, is to not take it.

"If you have already taken Donkey Kong or any other illegal drug and feel unwell, please seek medical help immediately."

The pills are shaped and stamped to look like the face of the Nintendo character Donkey Kong, an ape, and are stamped with the character's "DK" logo on the reverse.

Superintendent McLain added: “We want everyone to be aware of the devastating consequences that drugs can have and we’re especially asking all parents to speak to their children and to share our message.”

Gwent Police asked anyone with information about the supply of illegal drugs in Gwent to contact them on 101 or via social media, or on 999 in an emergency.
