RESIDENTS have voiced concerns that the former Centurion Pub is now a hazard after it was gutted by fire last week.
Residents say the site could also become a magnet for crime.
Shaun Skinner, of St Julian’s, said: “I hope something is sorted quickly.
“You often hear of crime taking place at derelict building. We do not want that happening.”
And Maureen Jones, who also lives in the area, added: “The building is hazardous - well, what is left of the building.
“It is going to be demolished and I hope it happens soon. We do not want any crime there.”
Following the fire a 17-year-old girl was arrested on suspicion of arson. She has since been released under investigation.
Gwent Police are asking anyone with information to call them on 101 quoting log number 462 11/04/19 or to direct message them on Facebook or Twitter.
Alternatively call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
Newport City Council’s planning committee recently granted planning permission for 10 affordable homes on the site of the former pub in Heather Road.
