Last week's ship was British Hovercraft Corporation's first production line AP1-88. The picture was taken in 1984 when the low-cost hovercraft had successfully completed trials in the Solent.
The 100-seater craft reached speeds of 45-60 knots during trials in which Force 4 to Force 7 winds were blowing.
The AP1-88 boasts a new skirt enabling it to deal with rough waves and also reduce spray, new increased seat height for better visibility, significantly increased manoeuvrability due to greater power from the bow thrusters. These enable the craft to not only turn its own length but to hold a very straight course in cross-wind conditions at sea.
