Last week we asked people their favourite places for Indian food in Newport and had some hot suggestions. This week our focus is the best venues to enjoy live music acts. Our reporter LEAH POWELL asked the people of Newport for their thoughts

NEWPORT has a rich musical history, but how is it coping in the present? Here are the best places to listen to live music currently, according to you...

1) Slipping Jimmy’s, High Street, Newport

South Wales Argus:

Slipping Jimmy’s Bar & Grill proved the most popular with fans of the venue praising its place in the live music scene.

Members of the public sung praises about the friendly staff and the fantastic atmosphere which showcases a variety of live music acts.

Anita Bee, who travels from Caerphilly to visit, said: “It’s the best retro pub in South Wales – whether you’re 18 or 80 you’ll have a good night at Slipping Jimmy’s as the bands are always great!”

Slipping Jimmy’s is open 4pm-9pm on weekdays, noon-2am on Fridays and Saturdays and 6pm-11pm on Sundays.

2) McCann’s Rock ‘n’ Ale Bar, High Street, Newport

South Wales Argus:

A close second was McCann’s Rock ‘n’ Ale Bar, with one woman travelling from Varteg, Pontypool, to visit the venue.

Emma Corten said: “Easiest vote ever! McCann’s has brilliant live music every weekend. There’s always a fantastic atmosphere and the staff are excellent.”

The bar is open noon-11pm Sunday to Wednesday, noon-1am on Thursdays, noon-2am on Fridays and noon-3am on Saturdays.

3) Le Public Space, High Street, Newport

South Wales Argus:

Le Public Space, formerly Le Pub, was also ranked favourably.

Tahnee Chambers said: “I can go to Le Pub any time of day and feel at home and welcome.

“It’s a place to drink great booze with great people and be inspired creatively.”

Le Public Space is open from 4.30pm to 2am most days but opens from noon until 3am on Fridays and Saturdays.

4) The Neon, Clarence Place, Newport

South Wales Argus:

The Neon was named as a fantastic place for bigger live music acts, with the venue also hosting a variety of entertainment.

Dave Went, who also praised Slipping Jimmy’s Bar & Grill and McCann’s Rock ‘n’ Ale Bar said: “The Neon is always great for the big shows.”

The Neon is open from 9am to 5pm Monday to Friday and 10am to 5pm on Saturdays. Times may vary based on events.

5) El Siecos, High Street, Newport

South Wales Argus:

El Siecos is another contender for most popular music venue.

The venue opened in May last year and has been holdings it own since, run by Ashley Sicolo, the grandson of John Sicolo who ran TJs back in the day.

Described as a ‘musical museum with cocktails’ it’s no wonder El Siecos made the top five.

El Siecos is open from noon each day, closing at midnight on weekdays and 3am on Fridays and Saturdays.
