TABLET computers could be given to all councillors in Newport as the authority looks to increase the use of technology in meetings.

The proposal is aimed at allowing a more paperless approach as currently documents are printed and given to members in paper form ahead of meetings.

The roll-out would cost up to £35,430 over three years - made up of a £12,165 one off purchase and an ongoing expense of £7,755 per year.

But council documents say reducing the need for printed copies will provide a small saving, as well as environmental benefits, information security improvements, and administrative efficiencies.

The one-off cost for devices would be met from an existing "tech fund", while ongoing expenses from the council's democratic services budget.

Councillors currently have laptops which were provided in May, 2017.

Smartphones with access to email and voice call facilities are also offered to councillors with additional responsibilities including the cabinet and the chairs of committees.

However tablet computers are said to be more effective for reading documents in council meetings due to their screen size.

They are also said to be easy to use with touch screens and the option of a magnetic wireless keyboard and case.

The preferred option is to provide tablets to all councillors, smart phones for specified roles only and a basic phone for calls and texts to councillors who require one.

Cllr David Mayer, cabinet member for community and resources, gave his backing to the proposed changes due to be decided next Thursday, May 2.

He said: "It is crucial for members to have the equipment required to carry out their role effectively.

"The proposed devices will help in the move from paper processes to digital methods.

"I believe this proposal provides a sound solution whilst keeping costs at a suitable level."

Alternative options to be considered are to give tablets and smart phones to all councillors, at a cost of £51,215, or to issue just tablets or smart phones based on choice, at a cost of £30,250.
