A GWENT primary school is celebrating receiving ‘excellent’ grades across all areas in a recent Estyn inspection.

Trinant Primary School gained top marks for standards; wellbeing and attitudes to learning; teaching and learning experiences; care, support and guidance; and leadership management.

The report stated “Pupils at Trinant Primary enjoy coming to school. The development of pupils’ information and communication technology (ICT) and literacy skills are particular strengths. The staff provide a highly caring and supportive environment that encourages all pupils to flourish. Standards of behaviour in lessons and around the school are exemplary and there is a strong sense of mutual respect and trust between staff and pupils.

"The head-teacher, staff and governors have a vision for the school that focuses clearly on its role at the heart of the community and the development of pupil wellbeing. Governors play a particularly strong role in supporting school improvement. Leaders are very effective in sharing the best elements of professional practice within the school and with other schools."

Sian James, head-teacher said “I take great pride in the excellent report from Estyn which celebrates all of the effective work that goes on in Trinant Primary every day.

We have a fantastic team here at Trinant Primary School with long-standing, dedicated staff and governors who go over and above.

Pupils appreciate this and are kind, courteous, and enthusiastic learners who are very rarely absent from school.

Many parents and guardians are actively engaged in their child’s learning journey and support school wherever they can from digging the gardens, cleaning the pets with pupils to listening to readers.”

Councillor Philippa Marsden, Cabinet Member for Education and Achievement said: “This is fantastic news and is testament to the consistent and hard work of the children, staff, governors and the school’s wider community. I’d like to thank everyone who has contributed towards making Trinant Primary such a successful school.”

The inspectors only offered two recommendations for improving the school: “Improve pupils’ extended writing in the foundation phase and provide regular opportunities for pupils to learn in the outdoor environment."

Estyn have asked the school to prepare case studies on its work on enriching learning experiences for pupils and the role of the governing body in school improvement, for sharing online. The full report can be found at estyn.gov.wales
