OPPORTUNISTIC thieves have been stealing registration plates and items from unlocked cars in Newport.

A series of incidents in the Maindee and Alway wards of the city, has prompted Gwent Police to issue a warning to people who may be leaving their cars unlocked on their driveways.

PC Leanne Pole, of the Newport East Neighbourhood Policing Team, said: "It is clear that a number of these thefts are opportunistic, in that the vehicles were left unlocked on driveways.

"Whilst we are continuing to investigate, we would like to remind drivers to be vigilant and take all necessary precautions to protect themselves from crime. Do not make yourself vulnerable to this type of offence."

Thefts have been reported in numerous locations in recent weeks, including Merlin Crescent, Caerleon Road, Constable Drive, Catsash Road, Elgar Circle, Cot Hill, Orb Drive, Seabreeze Avenue, Lysaght Gardens, Tantallus Way, Clarke Road, Llanwern Road and Aberthaw Road.

Police are encouraging people to remove valuable items from sight, or from the vehicle, when not in use and wherever possible to park and leave cars in well-lit areas, covered by CCTV.

PC Pole added: "I would also like to urge anyone who feels they have been a victim of this sort of crime to report this to us immediately so we can carry out enquiries as soon as possible, in an effort to identify those responsible.

"If you have any information, please contact Gwent Police on 101, quoting log 420 of 3/5/19. You can also direct message us on Facebook or Twitter. Alternatively, contact Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111."
