TWO people have been taken to hospital following a two-vehicle accident on the A4049 in Caerphilly, which witnesses said sent one car "through a garden fence'.

The road is now closed in both directions from Bryn Road / Crown Lane to Hawtin Park. 

Drivers are advised to avoid the area if possible.

A witness said: "The accident looked quite bad.

"One of the cars has gone through someone's fence.

"It looks like they have managed to hit each other head on when going round the corner.

"The ambulances have left now, but the road is still closed."

A Gwent Police spokesman said: "At approximately 6.20am this morning, we received reports of a road traffic collision close to the Crown Roundabout, linking the A472 and A4049 near Pontllanfraith.

"A green Citroen Picasso and grey Vauxhall Astra collided, leaving both drivers with injuries, not believed to be serious.

"Fire and ambulance crews attended, and road closures were put into place in the local area."

A spokesman for the Wealsh Ambulance Service said: "We were called on Monday, July 8 at approximately 6.20am to reports of a road traffic accident involving two vehicles near Pontllanfraith.

"We responded with one rapid response vehicle and two ambulances and we were supported by the Police and Fire and Rescue services.

"Two patients were transported by road ambulance to Royal Gwent Hospital, Newport.”
