A HOUSING association has apologised after a disabled tenant was left with a gaping hole in his ceiling for weeks.

The huge void was formed at the house on Grasmere Avenue in Orford on December 12, when the ceiling fell through – leaving debris strewn across the kitchen below.

But Torus, the housing association which owns the property, failed to repair the damage for more than three weeks.

While a temporary fix was made on January 3 by placing a wooden board over the hole, which was caused by a water leak from an upstairs bathroom, a permanent repair has still not been made.

This is now scheduled to take place later this month.

The temporary fix

The tenant, who suffers from a number of long-term health problems and has his four-month-old baby daughter living in the property, was left angered by Torus’ inaction over the issue – having been left lumbered with the unsightly mess over the whole of the Christmas period.

And the housing association has now apologised to the residents, blaming the delay to the repairs on an automatic appointment scheduling system not working correctly.

A spokesman said: “We attended an emergency callout to the property, where a water leak had caused damage to the ceiling.

“An appointment was made for the following day, and a leak from the upstairs bath was repaired.

“A follow-up appointment should automatically have been scheduled to make good the damage to the ceiling, but unfortunately the job was not logged and as a result the work was delayed.

“We have apologised to the tenant for this, and a full repair to the ceiling is scheduled for January 27.”
