UPDATE 10.20am: Traffic has now returned to normal on the M4 westbound around Newport after the crash and breakdown around junction 28.

Congestion on link roads has also dispersed.

UPDATE 9.56am: All lanes have now reopened on the M4 westbound after the earlier incidents, but remains very slow around Newport.

Travel time for getting from junction 24 (Coldra) to 28 (Tredegar Park) is estimated at 30 minutes.

UPDATE 9.20am: A lane remains closed near junction 28 westbound because there is oil on the road.

Travel time through the westbound section between junctions 24 (Coldra) and 28 (Tredegar Park) is estimated at 50 minutes.

UPDATE 9.04am: Traffic is tailing back around seven miles westbound, to shortly before junction 24 (Coldra).

There is congestion on several roads linking with the M4 as a result, notably the A4042, the A4051 (Malpas Road) and the westbound A48 Southern Distributor Road.

Traffic on the A4042 southbound is queuing back to the Turnpike roundabout at Llantarnam.

Malpas Road is queuing back northbound to the Harlequin roundabout and southbound to the Woodlands roundabout (for Cwmbran Drive).

The A48 is slow westbound back to the Transporter Bridge.

UPDATE 8.59am: A recovery vehicle is at the scene of the incident. Cameras earlier showed two cars on the hard shoulder.

UPDATE 8.41am: AA Roadwatch is now reporting that there has been a crash westbound near junction 28 (Tredegar Park) of the M4, as well as problems caused by a broken down lorry.

The lorry - which was blocking the middle lane west of junction 28 westbound - has been moved.

But a lane remains closed due to the crash and westbound tailbacks stretch back to junction 24 (Coldra).

UPDATE 8.26am: All lanes of the M4 have now reoped, but longtailbacks remain, to beyond junction 24 (Coldra) westbound, and will take some time to clear.

UPDATE 8.24am: Contrary to earlier reports, police have now confirmed that the problem was a broken down lorry that had blocked the middle lane of the M4 westbound, just west of junction 28 (Tredegar Park).

UPDATE 8.11am: Traffic is now tailing back more than five miles westbound around Newport, towards junction 24 (Coldra).

UPDATE 8.06am: The tailback from the crash near junction 28 (Tredegar Park) is causing knock-on problems around junction 26 (Malpas).

Traffic is queuing back approaching the junction on Malpas Road,both north and south 

UPDATE 7.58am: Travel time around Newport on the M4 is currently estimated at 55 minutes.

Congestion westbound is now back to beyond junction 25 (Caerleon).

A CRASH has partially blocked the M4 westbound at junction 28 (Tredegar Park) in Newport.

Traffic is currently queuing back to junction 26 (Malpas).
