FROM the Archive this week features a photograph of the feeder stream in The Knap Gardens, in Barry.

In 1927 Barry classed itself as the most progressive holiday resort in Wales and boasted new promenades, new walks and gardens, a new boating lake and new shelters.

This photograph was taken around the time The Knap Gardens were opened.

It’s a charming photograph of toy sail boats on the feeder stream.

With a massive injection of Government money in 1927, Barry spent £20,000 on building The Knap swimming pool and boating lake.

The grounds and walls for The Knap cost a further £15,000.

The Government offered to pay 65 per cent for half the period of the loan of £35,000.

It was seen as a bold and courageous undertaking in Barry at the time.

Everyone agreed the improvements at The Knap were wonderful.

The Barry & District News would like to thank Cllr Shirley Hodges for the photograph and information.
