A NEW fund to support charities and businesses in Wales and ensure they can continue supporting the most vulnerable members of society has been welcomed by Newport's two AMs.

Cancelled fundraisers and closed shops have placed many charitable organisations under intense financial pressure, with some fearing they will not raise enough money to maintain their vital services.

Earlier this week the Welsh Government announced to put a new £500 million fund to be used to support businesses, charities and social enterprises affected by the pandemic. The Economic Resilience Fund will focus on those who have missed out on support schemes already announced by the UK and Welsh Governments.

Newport's AMs, John Griffiths and Jayne Bryant, welcomed the news.

Mr Griffiths, who represents Newport East, said: “In the last couple of weeks, many businesses and charities have contacted me about the coronavirus pandemic.

"They are understandably worried about the future of their businesses and organisations, but also the livelihoods of their staff.

“We need to be equal to the challenges this virus presents to our businesses and charities – and that’s why I’m pleased our Welsh Labour Government continues to look at new ways in which it can support them and work with other stakeholders such as Newport City Council during this time.”

Newport West AM Jayne Bryant also praised the Welsh Government for their pledge of support for charities.

Ms Bryant said: “What has become clear over the past couple of weeks is that there are sadly a number of Newport residents, charities and businesses that are falling in between the gaps of support being offered.

"I am pleased that the Welsh Government has noticed this and is plugging this gap. I welcome this resilience fund and would encourage all to apply.”
