ALL weddings scheduled to be held in Newport in April and May have been cancelled due to the coronavirus outbreak.

Newport City Council has cancelled all weddings scheduled up to May 31 – and this may be extended further.

The council has also deferred notices of marriage and civil partnerships, which is likely to affect those with summer weddings who are yet to give notice.

Notice must be given at least 28 days before the wedding day.

The council said: “We appreciate this is a worrying time for everyone but please do not telephone our office as our teams are busy with critical work.”

Blaenau Gwent, Caerphilly and Torfaen have also cancelled all weddings “for the foreseeable future” in line with Government instructions.

Monmouthshire County Council has cancelled weddings until at least April 13 – where the Government’s three-week lockdown comes to an end.

A council spokesman said: “As a result of the uncertainty we have made the decision not to make any new bookings at this time.

“I appreciate that this is very frustrating for our couples and our venues who would like to get provisional bookings made, however, there will be a significant number of couples impacted and we need to re-arrange fairly when the situation improves.

“Different couples will have different priorities so this process will take some time. We would ask you to please bear this in mind.”
