NEWPORT East AM John Griffiths has encouraged workers to join a trade union, saying membership to a union has "never been more important".

Mr Griffiths made the statement while recognising International Workers' Day on Friday, May 1.

He said: “Covid-19 has caused a lot of economic uncertainty with people naturally feeling anxious about what the future holds with their jobs.

“Acquiring new skills and qualifications through the TUC’s Union Learn programmes can be a great way to boost people’s skills, which in turn is also good for their employers.

"Once we are over the worst of this pandemic, rebuilding the economy will be critical – and to do that we will need a well-skilled workforce across all sectors.”

James Clarke, branch secretary of the Communication Workers Union (CWU) Postal in Gwent, said: “John is absolutely correct regarding joining a trade union and to have that support is crucial in these tough times."
