A POUNDSTRETCHER store in a Caerphilly shopping centre could be replaced by a gym.

An application has been submitted to the county borough council to convert the retail space in the town's Castle View shopping centre currently occupied by Poundstretcher into a gym.

The application says the gym would be staffed from 8am to 10pm on Monday to Saturday and 8am to 8pm on a Sunday.

A planning and access statement says that measures would be taken to limit the noise impact.

The gym will have “low volume background music” rather than the “loud bass beats typically associated with most gyms”.

The statement says: “The gym will have control equipment that sets music to levels that do not exceed approved levels.

“All cardiovascular equipment has individual television screens and members wear headphones to listen to the sound.

“High impact resilient rubber flooring will be used in the free weights area to absorb the impact of weights onto the surface and to mitigate any potential noise.”

As the unit is in the Castle View shopping centre, the closest residential homes are separated by a large car park and their gardens so there is no expected impact on neighbouring properties.

There will be no loss of parking from the change of use.

A decision will be made on the change of use in the coming months.
