MEMBERS of Caerleon's creative crotchet and knitting group Prosecco and Purls have been busy during lockdown making knitted scenes to put on display in the community.

Not long after lockdown was announced, knitted rainbows started appearing across the town, a follow-up to the group's festive scenes made entirely of wool, which were placed on top of postboxes.

Its more recent creations include Easter-inspired toppers for the postboxes, bollards covered in woolly wildlife and a World War One-inspired nurse branding the slogan ‘Save the NHS’.

The group's aim is to “brighten up the village” and put a smile on people's faces.

“Gladys the World War One nurse scarecrow has come out of retirement to shout for the NHS,” said group member Barbara Parsons.

“She was in the Ponthir and Llanfrechfa scarecrow competition to mark the end of World War One. She came first with Sean the soldier, who came out of retirement for the VE Day celebrations.

“Gladys has been busy; she goes up and down the road if there is a birthday.

“She started life off in 2017 and was originally Snow White. My husband made her.

“We also had the Larkfield Close gnomes with her that my husband made with the help of some neighbours.

"One of the gnomes became the solider and the other one is getting converted for something we’re doing later this year, all being well”.

The group are using the Messenger app to communicate, and as they all live close to one another they can deliver and collect bits and pieces while distancing.

The creations are left outside in a bag for collection, to then be spread across Caerleon.
