CHEPSTOW will host its own Black Lives Matter march this weekend.

Following similar events in Newport and Abergavenny this week, three Chepstow residents decided to stage a march in their home town.

Alexander Doig, Nadia Thomas and Luke Fletcher have organised the event to support the Black Lives Matter movement .

It will form part of a world-wide surge of action following the death of George Floyd - who died after a police officer knelt on his neck - in Minneapolis last month.

The Chepstow event will take place at 1pm on Saturday, June 13 and will start at The Dell park in the town.

Billed as the first event of its kind in the town's history by organisers, those planning to attend have been urged to take the pandemic into account.

"Please wear a face mask or bandana and keep at least two metres apart from those who are not members of your immediate family," said organiser Alexander Doig.

People unable to attend while they shield from Covid-19 have been asked to demonstrate their support with signs in your windows and joining in by clapping and cheering from your front doors.

Miss Thomas, another of the event organisers was born in Hampshire in 1994 to a white British mother and a black Caribbean father.

She said that experience of different cultures is something which can benefit everyone.

"I was raised in a predominantly white area of Wales from the age of five but spent most summers in Antigua with my West Indian family," she said.

"Everything I learned has spurred me to do better and to promote better.

"There is more to be done. There is progress to be made. We’re fighting for a better UK and a better world.

"That’s what we are doing. We’re not igniting a race war, we’re promoting a better Britain.

"Please, don’t fight us. Help us progress."
