SITUATED in the lanes between Usk and Raglan, the Hall Inn in Gwehelog is a delightful traditional country pub in a picturesque rural setting.

The rustic feel of the inn, with its low, wooden-beamed ceilings and large, open fireplaces, gives diners a warm welcome, particularly on a cold winter night.

To start I warmed myself up with my favourite soup, leek and potato, which was creamy, thick and filling.

My friend had the smoked chicken and bacon salad, which was piled high on the plate and covered in a tasty, tangy dressing.

For main course my friend had a delicious half duck; its perfectly crispy skin covering the moist and tender meat within.

I had the pork in honey mustard cream sauce.

The pork itself was fine; juicy and tender with a little bit of crackling round the edges.

But the sauce, while rich and smooth, was a little overpowering and swamped the meat.

We both opted for saute potatoes and vegetables to accompany our main courses, the helpings so generous we failed to finish them.

For dessert, I had a chocolate ice cream, something that I considered to be a boring choice but was excellently presented and enough to satisfy my sweet tooth.

My friend had bread and butter pudding, which was warm delicious and filling, as you would expect.

The bill, including drinks, came to £59.00.
