A GROUP of green-fingered children are hoping their new project will raise the spirits of elderly people in the Kendal community.

Key worker children from schools including Stramongate Primary School and St Thomas’ CE Primary School have been trying to cheer the elderly community who are isolating and lonely, by gifting them a potted plant container.

‘Pots of happiness’ was the idea of Hazel Belshaw, co-ordinator for Kendal Community Emergency Planning Group (KCEPG).

Managing to secure funding from supermarket Tesco, basic supplies such as compost, containers and bedding plants were bought.

Participating children then took great enjoyment in planting the gifts, before the finished items were delivered to their recipients.

Volunteers involved in the project and who have been helping KCEPG during the pandemic, were asked to nominate those in the community they had been helping during this time.

Almost all of the beautiful pots have now been delivered.

Joe Murray QPM, chair of Kendal Community Emergency Planning Group, said he was hoping to collaborate with other schools on the project, as there is still some funding left.
