UPDATE 6.45PM: The westbound M4 has reopened after the earlier emergency lane closure.

UPDATE 5.30PM: There are still heavy delays on the M4 this evening as a result of the earlier emergency lane closure.
One lane has been closed on the westbound carriageway approaching Junction 24 for emergency repairs to a safety barrier.
Traffic continues to stretch back almost as far as Junction 23A (Magor), and the AA is reporting delays of five minutes.

AN EMERGENCY lane closure is in place on the M4 in Newport this afternoon.
Traffic officers are closing one lane on the westbound carriageway of the motorway at Junction 24 (Coldra).

The lane closure is in effect while traffic officers attend to "significant barrier damage", Traffic Wales said.
