FROM the Archive this week features a photograph of Barry dock, circa 1909.

Every year Dr Neale, the medical officer of health for Barry Urban District Council, reported to council on the vital statistics of the town.

In 1909, he reported the estimated population of Barry was 33,210.

The number of houses occupied was 6,180, the population mainly consisting of workers employed as fitters, boilermakers, ship repairers, coal trimmers, dock labourers, railway employees and seamen.

5,233 tons of rubbish had been produced by residents and was disposed of in the town Destructor.

The number of births registered was 931 and the number of deaths 321.

During the year 3,267 ships had been inspected - of which 2,771 were in good order.

It's no wonder Barry dock looks so busy in this photo, exports for 1909 were a total of 9,648,139 tons and imports 589,883 tons.
