Here's the latest Argus column by South Wales East MS Mark Reckless:

WHILE it is now recess time for Members of the ‘Welsh Parliament’ our service and tourism industries are working harder than ever.

The pubs and restaurants I have visited with my family have impressed me with how well they have adapted to strict social distancing laws, providing table service and innovative digital solutions to managerial rules put in place by Welsh Government.

It’s important that those of us who have time off this summer support those industries, not just on Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays, where the UK Government will help us with the tab, but on the weekends too.

MORE NEWS:

We’ve all played our part in the last few months, washing our hands and keeping our distance, and we deserve to treat ourselves.

Whilst I have criticised the Welsh Government’s approach to handling the virus, at this stage I am pleased that it hasn’t yet imposed the wearing face masks in shops, which would put further strain on our already struggling high streets.

With our consumer economy now in recession, it should be made as easy as possible for people to shop, to visit beauty spots and to eat out responsibly.

Unfortunately, I believe that for the most part the Welsh Government response to COVID-19 has been disproportionate, and the Brexit Party group continues to vote against Mark Drakeford’s measures.

We do this so we can get our industries back on their feet, and so we can get back to growth rather than contraction.

It troubles me that many pubs and restaurants remain closed, but with the two metre social distancing rule being enshrined in law in Wales, many businesses will not want to take the risk of prosecution.

Bizarrely, when I put this to the Welsh Government health minister Vaughan Gething, he told me I should at least agree that his Welsh Government have communicated their approach well.

With a digital post bag full of constituents who are unclear about the Welsh Government’s nebulous rules, I do not agree with the minister.

For many Members of the ‘Welsh Parliament’, much of our recent work has been writing to the government requesting clarification on a range of their regulations.
