A 37-YEAR-OLD cyclist has died following a crash in the early hours of Wednesday in Newport.

The man, from Newport, was taken to the Grange University Hospital following the incident, at around 2am on Caerleon Road, but died at the hospital.

A 26-year-old man, from Newport, has been arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving following the fatal crash.

Gwent Police said the driver of the car, a silver Audi A3, did not stop at the scene.

“A 26-year-old man from Newport has been arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving following a fatal road traffic collision in Newport,” said a police spokesperson.

“The collision was reported at approximately 2am (Wednesday, March 31), and took place on Caerleon Road, Newport.

“It involved a cyclist and a car, a silver Audi A3.

“The cyclist, a 37-year-old man from Newport, was taken to The Grange Hospital where he sadly died.

“The 26-year-old man arrested remains in police custody at this time.

“Officers are appealing for witnesses of the collision, or anyone who was in the following areas around 2am this morning who has dashcam footage to contact us: Malpas Road, Old Green Roundabout, Clarence Bridge/Town Bridge, Clarence Place, or Newport train station.

The surrounding roads were closed all morning, with all roads reopened by midday.
