ROAD safety concerns have been raised outside a primary school in Flintshire.

The issue revolves around parked cars on Crosstree Lane near Hawarden Village School.

First thing in the morning and at 3pm, the road is lined with parked cars dropping off and picking up children.

And some of the cars have been parked on a sharp bend - making them a hazard.

To try and stop drivers parking on the bend, cones were put down - but some people have ignored the cones and just park next to them, making them even more dangerous.

Hawarden community councillor, Ant Turton, said is it an accident waiting to happen.

"The issue of parking at Hawarden Village School has been rumbling for years," he said.

"A while back these cones were placed on the bend near the cemetery and for a while seemed to work.

"But on my regular drop off last week I witnessed several vehicles parked on the cones. This has made the road even narrower in places making it even more dangerous."

Cars have been parking next to the cones placed to stop parking there.

Cllr Turton said there was a near miss just the other day when a vehicle which had stopped in the road to drop children off resulted in a car overtaking as the stationary vehicle pulled away at the same time.

He said: "The end result here, which I would hope everyone shares, is to make areas outside schools safe places.

"I hope that it's not going to take a child being knocked over before something is done."

Cllr Turton said there are nearby car parks in Tinkersdale, Hawarden Institute and the Masonic Hall that can be used by parents.

Steve Jones, Flintshire Council's chief officer for Streetscene and transportation, said: “Flintshire County Council is aware that schools across the county sometimes have parking issues at drop-off and pick-up.

"Streetscene and Transportation work directly with local members and the schools to identify their specific issues and look to provide approaches to alleviate problems at peak times through measures such as improvement schemes, development of active travel routes, parking restrictions and enhanced enforcement.”
