ONE area of Newport has one of the highest Covid cases rates in the country.

In the last week, 19 new coronavirus cases were reported in Stow Hill, giving the area a Covid case rate of 289.7.

That rate is in the top ten per cent across Wales for the seven days between July 22 and July 28.

Stow Hill is one of six areas in Newport with a case rate north of 200 cases per 100,000 residents.

The others include Ringland, with 14 new cases and a rate of 242.4, and Rogerstone, with 22 new cases at a rate of 238.4.

Maindee (237.8), St Julians & Barnardtown (225.6), and Lawrence Hill (207.1) also recorded Covid cases rates above 200 per 100,000 residents.

Only one other area of Gwent had a case rate north of 200.

That was Crosskeys South & Ynysddu, in Caerphilly, which like Stow Hill was in the top ten per cent of case rates across Wales.

In the seven day time period, there were 15 new cases in the area, a rate of 257.4.

  • Ebbw Vale South and Cwm: 11 new cases; a rate of 129.7 per 100,000 people.
  • Tredegar and Georgetown: five new cases; a rate of 59.9 per 100,000 people (down from eight new cases).
  • Abertillery North and Cwmtillery: five new cases; a rate of 55.5 per 100,000 people (up from fewer than two new cases).
  • Abertillery South and Llanhilleth: seven new cases; a rate of 99.6 per 100,000 people (down from eight new cases).

  • Rhymney, Pontlottyn and Abertysswg: 11 new cases; a rate of 123.9 per 100,000 people (down from 14 new cases).
  • New Tredegar and Darran Valley: eight new cases; a rate of 109.3 per 100,000 people (down from 11 new cases).
  • North Blackwood, Argoed and Markham: three new cases; a rate of 52.9 per 100,000 people.
  • Aberbargoed and Gilfach: ten new cases; a rate of 164.7 per 100,000 people.
  • Bargoed: five new cases; a rate of 81.0 per 100,000 people.
  • St Cattwg: nine new cases; a rate of 118.3 per 100,000 people (down from 19 new cases).
  • Pengam and Cefn Fforest: seven new cases; a rate of 90.4 per 100,000 people (up from six new cases).
  • Blackwood: three new cases; a rate of 40.8 per 100,000 people (down from six new cases).
  • Oakdale and Pentwyn: seven new cases; a rate of 72.2 per 100,000 people.
