ONE area of Gwent has one of the highest Covid rates in Wales over the last seven days.

Almost one in every 100 people in Bargoed have tested positive for coronavirus over the last week.

The area has seen 57 new cases during the period, a Covid case rate of 923.1 cases per 100,000 residents.

That puts it in the top ten per cent across the country, and makes it by far the largest Covid hotspot in Gwent.

It is one of a number of areas within the Caerphilly County Borough with high rates.

Oakdale & Pentwyn, and Pontllanfraith both have Covid case rates north of 600 after 64 and 54 cases were recorded in the areas over the last week.

And Caerphilly is responsible for 12 of the 17 areas across Gwent with case rates above 500.

The remaining five are split between Newport (four) and Torfaen (one).
