THE FIRST coronavirus booster vaccines have been administered in the Gwent region this week.

The booster programme began on Monday, with health board staff visiting care homes to vaccinate elderly and vulnerable residents and their carers.

From next week, healthcare staff will be invited to receive their a booster vaccination.

An Aneurin Bevan University Health Board spokeswoman said that residents would be invited for a booster vaccination in the same order that vaccinations were prioritised previously, following guidance from the Joint Committee of Vaccinations and Immunisations (JCVI).

The health board has confirmed that the Pfizer vaccine will be used “for the core booster programme,” however, those unable to receive an mRNA vaccine will be offered a dose of the Oxford AstraZeneca vaccine as a booster.

A spokeswoman for Aneurin Bevan University Health Board said: “Our booster programme began on Monday, September 20, commencing with vaccinating residents from care homes for older adults and their carers.

“Booster vaccinations for healthcare staff will commence from Monday, September 27.

“We are offering booster vaccinations according to the recommendations of the Joint Committee of Vaccinations and Immunisations (JCVI), following the same order as eligible individuals were called for their second dose six months or more ago.”
