Two air ambulances have been called to a major Gwent road this afternoon, after a three car crash.

The emergency services were called to the A472 at Hafodyrynys shortly after 12.30pm today (Thursday, September 23).

Both directions of a stretch of road between Crumlin and Pontypool has been closed, as a result of the crash.

The incident has sparked a major emergency services response.

Along with Gwent Police and the South Wales Fire Service, the Welsh Ambulance Service sent two rapid response cars and four emergency ambulances, and crews were supported by the Trust’s Hazardous Area Response Team and a Duty Operations Manager.

Two air ambulances, and a BASICS doctor were also sent to the scene.

It has since been confirmed that three patients were treated at the scene, before being taken by land ambulance to the University Hospital of Wales in Cardiff.

The road remains closed at this time.

Other motorists are currently being advised to avoid the area, with Gwent Police currently involved in traffic management.

There is believed to be queues of traffic in surrounding areas as a result of this road closure.

What’s more, bus operator Stagecoach South Wales has taken to social media to keep customers informed of disruption.

In a Tweet, they confirmed that their 21 service is only able to run between Cwmbran and Pontypool at this time.

There is no current indication as to when the road will be reopened.
