MORE than a fifth of new coronavirus cases in Wales are in Gwent, according to the latest figures from Public Health Wales.

1,219 new cases have been recorded in Gwent, with the figures accurate from September 26.

This number means that roughly 21 per cent of all cases in Wales are in Gwent.

Caerphilly has the fourth highest amount of new cases in Wales as 442 positive tests were recorded.

In contrast, Monmouthshire has the fourth lowest amount of new cases, with 128.

All of Wales recorded 5,659 cases, including those of residents outside of Wales (68).

All areas of Gwent apart from Monmouthshire have higher cases per 100,000 people than the average for all of Wales (177.3).

Caerphilly has the second highest rate of positive Covid cases in Wales, with 244.1 cases per 100,000 people - only Neath Port Talbot has a higher rate with 248.4 cases per 100,000 people.
