The car park at Newport Railway Station has been closed to the public this weekend, as a result of large scale disruption to train services.

No trains are running between Cardiff and Newport, or Newport and Bristol Parkway today (Sunday, October 10).

As a result, replacement buses have been arranged, to ferry passengers to their destinations.

However, due to the greater than usual level of disruption, more buses than usual have been arranged.

But, in order to make room for all the buses, the main passenger car park at Newport Railway Station has been closed to the public.

Last night, the roads around the city centre were busy, as buses were moved into position ahead of a day of disruption.

This morning, the station was quiet – though staff were seen in the car park area, in anticipation of the altered services.

Why aren’t trains running?

The main reason for disruption between Newport Railway Station and Bristol comes in and around the Severn Tunnel.

This weekend, and every weekend between now and the end of October, Network Rail are set to carry out essential maintenance in the tunnel.

While Network Rail bosses have said that it “will help ensure the smooth running of services for passengers” in the long term, it is leading to short term disruption.

This weekend is the first of four on which replacement buses will operate.

Most buses are set to take passengers directly to Bristol Parkway from Newport Railway Station.

Some will also call at Severn Tunnel Junction and Patchway in between.

Separately, Transport for Wales (TfW) have said that replacement buses are running between Cardiff and Newport, and onwards to Shrewsbury.

It is not immediately clear what work is being carried out along this route at this time.

However, TfW has confirmed that the disruption will take place every weekend until October 17.
