The teenager stole a laptop and cash before he returned 24 hours later to take her car keys which he drove a short distance.

Mr Edwards said the victim confronted the defendant and his father Dean Raybould at the vehicle after she woke up.

After the first burglary, Raybould used the complainant’s credit card to buy goods worth £6.49 from a nearby Texaco garage, Newport Crown Court heard.

The prosecutor said: “After his arrest, the defendant sought to blame the victim and said she was making up the allegations because he owed her money.

“He denied committing the burglaries.

“The complainant had known the defendant for many years and she had provided him with a home when he was down on his luck.

“The victim said, ‘I can’t believe he has done this to me.’ “She says she has shed many tears and no longer feels safe in her own home.”

The defendant, of Welland Crescent, Bettws, Newport, later pleaded guilty to two counts of burglary, fraud and taking a vehicle without consent.

Raybould has seven previous convictions for 14 offences, including possession of a lock-knife, assault by beating and criminal damage.

Ben Waters, representing him, said he wished to apologise to the woman.

Judge Richard Williams told Raybould: “She says she feels betrayed and described you as being like a son to her.”

He added how the defendant had selected her as a “soft target”.

Raybould was sent to a young offender institution for 25 months.
