PUBLIC Health Wales has released the latest Covid figures for local authorities - and Caerphilly has once again recorded one of the highest numbers of new cases.

Gwent's Aneurin Bevan University Health Board region has reported 853 new cases of coronavirus in today's updates, of which 252 were in Caerphilly county borough.

Only Swansea (297) and Cardiff (260) reported more new cases today, and the Wales-wide total of new cases was 3,296.

In other parts of Gwent, Torfaen reported 193 new cases today, followed by Newport (171), Blaenau Gwent (133) and Monmouthshire (104).

Figures for the rolling seven-day average case rates show Gwent is still reporting higher rates of infection than the Wales average.

Nationally, there are 681 positive cases per 100,000 people, but each of Gwent's five council areas is reporting much higher infection rates.

Blaenau Gwent reported the equivalent of 1,185 infections per 100,000 people in the past week, and that rate remains the highest in Wales.

Elsewhere, Torfaen has a case rate of 1,000 infections per 100,000 people, followed by Caerphilly (961), Newport (797) and Monmouthshire (744), according to the most recent update.
