MOTORISTS from across Torfaen, Blaenau Gwent and Monmouthshire have been sentenced in Magistrates' Courts elsewhere in Wales last week.

Offences included driving without due care and attention, speeding, and failing to keep a vehicle up to the requirements needed for it to be insured.

Here is a round-up of last week's cases.

Torfaen

GARY ASHMAN, 43, of Usk Road in Pontypool, has been fined for keeping a vehicle which did not meet insurance requirements.

Ashman was named as the registered owner of the vehicle on March 3 when it did not meet the insurance requirements.

He pleaded not guilty, and the offence was proven in his absence at Swansea Magistrates’ Court on Monday, October 18.

Ashman was fined £220, and ordered to pay £140 in costs and a £34 surcharge.

MOHAMMED KAMRAN RAFIQUE, 25, of East Road in Oakfield, Cwmbran, has been ordered to pay more than £500 and handed nine points on his licence after driving without due care and attention.

Rafique was driving on the eastbound M4 at Pencoed on July 19 when the offence took place.

He pleaded guilty, and was fined £370 at Cardiff Magistrates' Court on Tuesday, October 19.

He was ordered to pay costs of £110, a surcharge of £37, and had nine points put on his licence.

RORI JOHN TURBERVILLE, 30, of Pentrepiod Road in Pontnewynydd, Pontypool, has been fined after driving without insurance or an MOT.

Turberville was caught driving a Citroen C1 on Maes Y Bedw in Bedlinog, Merthyr Tydfil, on July 26.

He pleaded guilty, and was sentenced at Cardiff Magistrates' Court on Thursday, October 21.

For driving with no insurance, Turberville was fined £120, ordered to pay £90 in costs and a £34 surcharge, and had six points added to his licence.

For using a motor vehicle on a road without a valid test certificate, he was fined £40.

Monmouthshire

JANINE ANDREWS, 38, of Ash Tree Road in Caerwent, Monmouthshire, has been ordered to pay more than £800 after refusing to identify the driver of a vehicle alleged to have been involved in an offence.

Andrews was asked by officers on April 15 to identify the driver of a Peugeot 208, which was alleged to have been driving at 36mph in a 30mph zone on Greenway Road in Cardiff, near the junction with Llanstephan Road.

The offence was proved using the Single Justice Procedure.

At Cardiff Magistrates' Court on Thursday October 21, Andrews was fined £660, and ordered to pay £90 in costs and a £66 surcharge.

She has been disqualified from driving for six months due to repeat offending, and has six points added to her licence.

Blaenau Gwent

ANDREA BRIDGES, 48, of Heather Close, Sirhowy in Tredegar must pay almost £350 after being caught by a manned speed camera driving six miles an hour over the limit.

Bridges was caught doing 36mph on High Street in Merthyr Tydfil – a 30mph zone – on April 23.

The offence was proved using the Single Justice Procedure at Cardiff Magistrates' Court on Thursday, October 21.

She was fined £220, and ordered to pay £90 in costs and a £34 surcharge.

She has also been handed three points on her licence.

JARED WATKINS, 21 of Queen Street in Nantyglo, Brynmawr, faced a similarly hefty fine after being caught driving at 35mph in a 30mph zone.

Watkins was caught by a speed camera driving southbound on North Road in Cardiff on April 19.

The offence was proved using Single Justice Procedure at Cardiff Magistrates' Court on Tuesday, October 19.

He was fined £220, and ordered to pay £90 in costs and a £34 surcharge.

He has also had three points added to his licence.

SEAN MARTIN MCDONOUGH, 57, of Carmel Street in Abertillery, admitted speeding on the A465 in Merthyr Tydfil.

McDonough was caught doing 68mph heading eastbound in a 60mph zone on the A465 between Cefn-coed-y-cymmer to Dowlais.

He pleaded guilty, and at Cardiff Magistrates' Court on Tuesday, October 19, was fined £83.

McDonough was also ordered to pay £90 in costs, and a £34 surcharge, as well as having three points added to his licence.
