A NEWPORT hospital has announced that it is set to unveil new facilities for patients, as part of a multi-million pound investment.

St. Joseph’s Hospital, in the Malpas area of the city has this week announced that £4.2 million worth of facilities will be made available over the coming months.

It comes after a £3 million day surgery unit and MRI facility were unveiled earlier in the year.

The new facilities are said to allow the hospital to increase the number of day surgeries available, and once complete, will grant the hospital capacity to see and treat 68,000 patients each year.

As part of these plans, recruitment for additional clinical roles is expected in the near future.

While the hospital primarily treats private patients, the hospital is also used to reduce NHS waiting times – with patients from health boards in England and Wales, including the Aneurin Bevan University Health Board in Newport and Gwent, being treated here.

Similar arrangements are in place with the Cardiff and Vale Health Board, and hospital groups in both Bristol and Weston-Super-Mare across the border.

What changes can be expected?

As part of the £4.2 million investment, a number of changes are coming to the hospital.

These include a new state-of-the-art X-Ray machine for their advanced diagnostic centre.

A new diagnostic reporting system is also set to be introduced.

In addition, there will also be extensive upgrading and refurbishment work carried out around the hospital.

As a result, there will be some reduction in hospital activity over Christmas – as this is when disruption can be kept to a minimum.

What has been said about the improvements?

Stuart Hammond, CEO of St Joseph’s Hospital, said: “We continue to support our colleagues in the NHS and use our learnings from 2020 to reshape what we do this year, constantly improving and offering the very best in patient-centred care.

“It is with this in mind that we’ve announced a further £4.2m investment into the hospital. The provision for increased demand from private patients with leading consultant specialists where safety comes first means expanding to increase current and future capacity. The new ownership and multi-million-pound investment have enabled us to do this in a safe environment.”

“Earlier this year we opened the brand new £3 million Day Surgery Unit and refurbished Hydrotherapy and Physiotherapy Unit. In recent weeks we have embraced technology with the introduction of game-changing artificial intelligence (AI)-enabled health assessments and have invested in advanced diagnostics.”
