AS PART of the long-running work converting the A465 Heads of the Valleys road into a dual carriageway, the stretch of the road between Brynmawr and Gilwern will be closed this weekend.

The major route will be closed from 8.30pm tonight, Friday, October 29, until 6pm on Sunday, October 31, so work can continue on converting it into a four lane dual carriageway.

These will not be the only closures of the road and a schedule is available online on Traffic Wales - though it may be subject to change.

A traffic study identified a need to make the road safer, especially around junctions and areas with poor visibility and  to improve traffic flow and make it safer to overtake.

The Welsh Government say that the changes to the road will improve access to key services, jobs and markets.

While the work is underway, the road may be closed, the lanes may be reduced and a temporary traffic light system may be set up to control traffic.

When the road is closed, motorists can cross the A465 at Saleyard from Station Road in the south to Main Road in the north and vice versa.

Motorists will also be able to cross the A465 using side roads, at Gilwern from Station Road in the south to Main Road in the north and vice versa.

In the event of an emergency on the M4 the road can be reopened and emergency vehicles can pass through at all times.
