PEOPLE living near coal tips will get alerts sent to their mobile phones if there is any danger through an app from the Welsh Government.

There are 2,456 coal tips in Wales, with 327 being classed as high risk.

It is estimated that it will cost between £500 million and £600 million to clear up the disused tips over the next 15 years.

Welsh minister for climate change Julie James said on the latest measures to protect lives: "It'd be an app on your mobile phone effectively and then you'll get an alert if there is a problem.

"Hopefully there will never be a problem because the other thing we're doing is putting in mitigation measures to make sure that we don't have slips and movements and so on.

"That's obviously the optimal, but we will want people to be alerted if there is a problem."

It is unknown when exactly the app will be released.

There have been calls for the UK Government to help with ensuring the coal tips are not a danger to the public in recent weeks.
