THE University of South Wales is holding an Open Day this month to help the future generation of teachers and school support staff aim for their dream careers.

The open day will take place at USW’s Newport Campus on Saturday, November 13, from 9am to 2pm, and is open to anyone who wants to find out about studying the range of education courses that USW offers, as well as career prospects.

Based right at the heart of the city, the campus is one of the university’s most iconic buildings, equipped with simulated environments to emulate the teaching profession.

Having recently marked World Teachers’ Day, USW’s School of Education, Early Years and Youth and Community Work attracts students from many different backgrounds who are passionate about helping people learn and making a difference to their lives.

With courses in initial teacher education, post-compulsory education and training, early years, and social work, USW students benefit from the expertise of lecturers in the fields of leading and managing additional learning needs, autism, leadership and management, innovation in learning and teaching, and children and adolescent mental health (CAMH).

Rebecca Haycock, senior lecturer in professional learning at the university, said: “This year we have seen an increase in the number of students studying on CAMH modules in line with the Welsh Government’s reforms to address children and young people’s mental health and well-being, including the study of adverse childhood experiences and opportunities for early intervention.”

USW embeds authentic learning experiences into its courses, including accreditation of qualified teacher status or registered social worker. Welsh- medium provision and language skill development is also an essential part of the teaching and learning experience for many of the students, and along with placements in Welsh-medium settings, they have opportunities to travel to schools as far afield as Prague, Budapest, and Qatar.

This month’s open day will give prospective students the opportunity to meet lecturers, chat to student ambassadors, tour the campus and accommodation, and receive advice on everything from finance to disability support.
