THERE is no need to make vaccinations mandatory for frontline NHS staff in Wales, the Welsh Government has said.

This comes as the UK Government is expected to announce compulsory Covid-19 vaccines for frontline NHS staff in England, with a deadline of next spring for both doses.

However, the Welsh Government has confirmed such a move is not needed in Wales, due to the high levels of staff who are fully vaccinated.

A Welsh Government spokesperson said: “Take up of the Covid-19 vaccine in Wales has been high among health and social care staff.

“More than 95 per cent of health care workers in Wales have had both doses of the vaccine, and more than two thirds have already received their booster jab.

“We want to thank them for saying yes to vaccination – it helps protect them and the people they care for.

“While Covid vaccination rates are at such high levels in these groups, we do not see the need for compulsory measures.

“We will continue to work closely with our health and social care sectors and professional bodies to promote uptake of the vaccine.”
