CYCLISTS and pedestrians in Newport will no longer need to use road crossings to get across the SDR – after work on a new path at Monkey Island has been completed.

The new route is an accessible ramp connecting the pedestrian and cycle path on the northern side of the SDR bridge with a new path under the bridge – providing a safer crossing under the bridge.

The path leads off into the Lysaght Village housing estate and to other commercial and residential links in Lliswerry.

Cllr Roger Jeavons, deputy leader of Newport City Council and cabinet member for city services, said: “I’m pleased to announce that we have opened the new active travel route at Monkey Island.

“This fully accessible route will benefit many residents by enabling them to make more journeys within their community either on foot or by cycling.

“I’m especially pleased that it will provide safer routes to school for children living in the Lysaght Village development.

“Not only do walking and cycling improve people’s health and wellbeing, but they also benefit the wider city by reducing the number of cars on our roads. This is why we are working hard to increase the active travel network so that our residents have more opportunities to walk or cycle.”

The council is currently asking residents to share their views on our proposals for future active travel routes in the city.
