A busy Newport road was closed in the early hours, due to a crash.

Early this morning (Saturday, November 20), a large section of Chepstow Road was closed by the emergency services.

Traffic was prevented from travelling in both directions along the road, which connects Maindee and Newport city centre, and motorists were urged to avoid the area.

According to Gwent Police, the road was closed off from the Cenotaph at Clarence Place to Maindee Police Station, near to the junction with London Street.

The force confirmed that the closure came as a result of “a road traffic collision”.

Chepstow Road was closed at around 2am, while the emergency services cleared the road and investigated the incident.

At this time, it is not known how many vehicles were involved, or if there were any injuries reported.

But, while the incident was ongoing in the early hours, other motorists were being urged to avoid the area, and seek other routes between Maindee and the city centre.

While it is unclear when the road reopened, it was business as usual along the route this morning – with traffic moving freely.
