NEW MEASURES to reduce overcrowding are to be introduced on Gwent train routes to South West England.

Extra capacity on the Cardiff-Portsmouth line, which stops at Bristol Temple Meads and Bath Spa, will be introduced from the summer.

The Department of Transport says train lengths will be increased from two carriages to three on the First Great Western route.

The extra capacity will run at least until summer 2011, and is part of a package of commitments fully funded by the company.

Other measures include increased compensation, additional cheap off-peak tickets and upgraded station information.

The franchise could lose its franchise if it doesn't adhere to its commitments.

A spokesperson for the Campaign for Better Transport said they were pleased with the move.

However they added they would like to see greater investment in the Severn Tunnel Junction station.

First Great Western was the subject of protests after cutbacks in evening services to the station in 2006.
